Dear Taryn: A Non-Believer Speaks

Taryn's Note: I received this message from a young ranger named, Shalyn. Although I do not agree with her views, I did advise that I would make her words public for those that may be interested.

Dear Taryn:

Believe in The Power of You!

So many have this idea that you must have a belief a faith if you will in a deity or deities in order to survive in this world.

A deity to make your crops grow, a deity for luck, a deity for the realms of magical power.

What if all of this was an untruth? That you, as a person, has the power to change and create your own destiny.

A person with a greenthumb makes their own crops grow. Through skill and teaching anyone can learn to grow a crop. Dear Druidess, you are powerful in your own right, you cannot truly believe there is an "Earth Mother" out there that provides you with your knowledge and knack for earth tilling and gardening.

What about the warriors? Can they honestly think that it is a deity that provides them skill with their swords and fists? I think not. I say it is through careful training and concentration that they are able to take down their enemies. Not some lucky charm and surely not a prayer!

I stand on a side that I am sure will be most unpopular. I stand on the side of the Godless. I do not believe in deities. They are mere humans with powers, just like the rest of us. Not cosmic beings but people who have through time honed their skills and through the eyes of people who feel they are lesser have given themselves a title, a status.

Are there others out there like me? I think there are. Will they stand for what you believe in? I truly hope so.
